TSA’s Building Blocks: Introducing the Science of Scaling-Up to Academia
From 2021 to 2023, The Scaling-Up Accelerators (TSA) led the groundbreaking initiative of integrating the Science of Scaling-Up into academic institutions across Pakistan. This initiative, supported by ExpandNet in collaboration with WHO, aims to empower future public health professionals with the tools and frameworks needed to implement sustainable, scalable solutions in public health and family planning.
Key Achievements in Academic Integration
- Health Services Academy (HSA), Islamabad
- June 2021: Scaling science was introduced to the HSA faculty and administration to enhance the Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum.
- November 2021 – June 2022: Three mini-courses were conducted, training a total of 60 MPH students in scaling methodologies as part of their research methodology unit.
- Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), Karachi
- August 2022: Initial orientation with SZABIST’s Public Health Department.
- August 2023: Staff orientation and signing of a Letter of Understanding (LoU) with ExpandNet to formalize collaboration.
- September 2023 – January 2024: MSPH coursework launched, with training workshops and mentorship for staff and students on the ExpandNet/WHO Framework.
- Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU)
- Collaborated with Dr. Narjis Zaidi, Community Health Coordinator, to introduce scaling-up science at the undergraduate level, paving the way for early adoption of public health scaling principles.
Global Engagement and Training
TSA’s expertise extended globally in 2024, with a session held at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, introducing MPH and DrPH students to the practical application of the WHO/ExpandNet Framework. This interactive session focused on aligning theory with real-world public health challenges to develop scalable solutions.
